Describe the principles of aseptic technique and explain the rationale behind the use of such stringent methods and procedures within the healthcare environment, and including the correct use of laminar flow hood

Explain and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles of aseptic technique, with special reference to the correct implementation of the following practical procedures:

  • Aseptic hand washing technique
  • Donning sterile (surgical gloves)
  • Donning of a sterile gown (also including face masks or shields, and head and shoe covers)
  • The safe and effective removal of used gloves and gowns
  • Preparing the work surface underneath a laminar flow hood.

Course Content

The video is broken down into topics as follows;

Hand washing and preparation

Aseptic technique always begins with proper and effective washing of the hands and forearms. The hands can act as major sources of contamination and nosocomial infection, and points to the reason why effective hand washing is crucial to the successful compounding of sterile products. The technique demonstrated outlines how to wash he hands and forearms, clean and scrub the nails, dry the hands and forearms as well as using alcohol-based skin cleaner.

Donning a pair of sterile (surgical) gloves is then demonstrated. The technique demonstrated outlines how to open and prepare the gloves for use as well as how to don the gloves. The demonstration also includes the use of surgical face masks or shields as well as head and shoe covers.

The final component here is a demonstration of how to don a sterile (surgical) gown buy showing how the gown is opened and prepared for use, and then how it is donned.

Basic principles of aseptic technique will be covered throughout the demonstration, as well as included in the activities performed in the guide.

Practical demonstrations of removing and discarding used surgical gloves, gowns, face masks, head and shoe coverings are also covered. In addition, working with liquids, creams, ointments, semisolids and solid dosage forms (including vials, ampoules and syringes) are discussed in practical demonstration.

Laminar flow hoods and sterile compounding

The use of the laminar flow hood in the pharmacy will be covered in this component. The video demonstration will include a demonstration of the necessary principles for preparing, using and cleaning the apparatus. The group activity will discuss different types of laminar flow hoods as well as advantages and disadvantaged thereof, and hazards associated with use of the hoods. In addition, a discussion and explanation of what a HEPA filter is, will be covered.

The course will be summarised with a question and answer section, the guide can be downloaded to facilitate further learning.
