Introduction

The NIMART course has been developed as a response to the call to action by the South African Government to strengthen the response to HIV and TB epidemics and is specifically developed for and aimed at professional nurses working in the field of HIV and TB. NIMART improves the effectiveness of HIV programmes in primary health settings.

The 5-day course is a standalone intensive course that focuses on the management of TB, HIV and STI’s as well as strengthening counselling skills, monitoring and evaluation of HIV and TB programmes.

On achieving this course, a learner will be able to:

• Discuss the basic virology, pathophysiology and clinical features of HIV infections.
• Assess the HIV-infected patient (history and examination) and stages using WHO staging criteria.
• Describe how opportunistic infections can be prevented and managed at PHC level.
• Discuss the prevention and manage Sexual Transmitted infection.
• Apply the diagnosis and management of patients with TB in HIV settings.
• Discuss the rationale for ARV usage and monitoring.
• Explain the initiation of ART’s to adults and children on ART.
• Discuss the skills necessary to monitor patients on ART including the management of treatment failure.
• Discuss the adherence to ART and the counselling of patients.
• Discuss the management of ART in women.
• Describe the basic basis of ART Drug Resistance.

Course Design

The short course in NIMART is a distance (e-learning) course.

Time

Participants are required to complete this course within 3 months from date of registration.

Course Content

The following topics are included in this short course:

• Virology, pathophysiology and clinical features of HIV infections
• HIV-infected patient (history and examination) and stages using WHO staging criteria
• Opportunistic infections can be prevented and managed at PHC level
• Prevention and manage Sexual Transmitted infection
• Diagnosis and management of patients with TB in HIV settings
• Rationale for ARV usage and monitoring
• Initiation of ART’s to adults and children on ART
• Skills necessary to monitor patients on ART including the management of treatment failure
• Adherence to ART
• Counselling of patients
• Management of ART in women
• Basic basis of ART Drug Resistance

Assessment

Participants are assessed through means of a pre- and post-test assessment.

Accreditation

Accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for Healthcare Professionals for 30 Clinical CEU’s on Level 2.

Certification

FPD will award participants with a certificate of completion for this course, should they successfully complete the assessment process.
