Course Content

The NYU Unlimited CPD Package in Pain Management currently consists of 6 available modules. Each module is presented by a topic expert and is presented in the form of video tuition. Please refer to the current available modules presented below:

The first section of the module is a review of the differentiating characteristics of acute abdominal pain. This is followed by a review of the common causes of abdominal pain. For each, the module will address the typical presenting signs and symptoms and recommended steps for assessment and diagnosis. Please note that this module is focuses on acute abdominal pain and does not address the many causes of chronic abdominal pain.

Calls to assess patients with new onset pain and/or swelling of a leg are common. The main goal of this learning module is to provide you with a structured approach to assessing the patient with new signs and symptoms related to the lower extremity, and to give you some guidelines for early management. Many of the causes of pain and swelling can be quite serious, and if not promptly diagnosed and treated, could have devastating outcomes including loss of limb or life. A very important goal is to help you recognize those conditions that need immediate attention.

The purpose of this learning module is to provide you with a structured approach to assessing a patient with low urine output or Oliguria. A common condition you will encounter as a junior resident. There are many underlying medical conditions that can lead to Oliguria. The goal of this instructional module is to help you make the correct diagnosis by locating and assessing the important clinical information that will either support or exclude various conditions.

The goal of this module is to provide you with the information you would need to assess the patient with the complaint of difficulty breathing, to help you make a reasonable diagnosis as to the underlying cause, and most importantly, to provide you with guidelines on the initial management to assure that the patient will have a favorable outcome.

Very often the management of hypertension is straight forward, perhaps restarting or increasing an existing medication. However, there is always the possibility that the patient is having a hypertensive urgency or hypertensive emergency. If these conditions are not recognized and properly managed in a timely manner, the result could be: stroke, heart failure, renal failure or death. The goal of this module is to provide you with guidelines to enable you to recognize, evaluate, and manage patients with hypertensive urgency and emergency.

Hypotension always requires an urgent evaluation to determine if the patient is perfusing their major organ systems, as well as a timely initiation of treatment to prevent progression to multi-organ failure or even death. The purpose of this module is to provide a framework to help you manage the hypotensive patient. The introduction is an overview of definitions and key concepts pertaining to hypotension and shock. Then, we will review the categories of shock and the relevant physical exam maneuvers that will help differentiate between these broad categories at the bedside. As the last part of the overview we will review each category of shock separately and discuss the various etiologies that fall into each group. This will be followed by a case presentation of a resident evaluating and managing a patient with hypotension. The last section consists of a series of practice cases for you to test your skills dealing with the hypotensive patient.

The goal of this module is to enable you to safely and effectively evaluate and manage acute pain in the inpatient setting even if you are unfamiliar with the patient, as often happens in a cross coverage situation.
