Breast cancer is not a disease of modern society. It was recognised by the Ancient Egyptians as long ago as 1600 BC. However, breast cancer has become a major health problem over the last 50 years, affecting as many as one in eight women during their lifetime and 1 in 10 women globally will die. In the families that it affects it causes immeasurable anxiety, suffering and loss. In many of the regions of the world, it is the most frequently occurring malignant disease in women, placing an enormous drain on healthcare resources, both directly and indirectly.
The burden of breast cancer worldwide in both developed and developing countries is increasing and evidence suggests that unless action is taken it will continue to grow for the foreseeable future. Effective countermeasures directed towards primary prevention, early diagnosis and therapy need to be identified and implemented to prevent the disease reaching epidemic proportions.
