Iron deficiency may lead to cognitive and behavioural disorders, including ADHD and depression.

Role of Iron in the Body and the Brain

Iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient deficiency worldwide and is particularly prevalent among pregnant women, infants and young children due to high iron demands during periods of rapid growth. Iron deficiency progresses in stages:

  • as a result of inadequate dietary intake,
  • due to compromised absorption, which may be due to inflammation (Pregnancy may also cause an inflammatory state, which leads to increases in hepcidin levels which in turn blocks absorption of iron),
  • or blood loss.

ASD (Autism spectrum disorder) + ADHD an evolution in diagnosis and management

Autism and ADHD are both neurodevelopmental disorders that are typically diagnosed in early childhood and persist into adulthood. The symptoms of these disorders are highly heterogeneous making diagnosis and management challenging.

ADHD and intimate partner violence

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder diagnosed based on 2 core symptom domains: Inattention and hyperactivity impulsivity, leading to functional impairment. It is commonly diagnosed in children and adolescents, but can and often does persist into adulthood.
