Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is not a condition that we often associate with active athletes. The elderly, overweight, postsurgical patient or patient with underlying malignancy are the more typical patients we have in mind. Although it is true that older age and inactivity are associated with VTE, athletes can also develop VTE.
Sudden cardiac death in sport
Sudden death in sport is not an uncommon tragic event. The cardiac exercise changes and manifestations during exercise have been investigated after two athletes developed pulmonary oedema in the 1978 Comrades marathon after these two athletes developed noncardiogenic pulmonary oedema.
